Dual Layer DVDs
If you've ever burned a DVD with your computer before, you may have thought that it was pretty cool. Up to 4.6 (or so) Gigabytes of data saved onto a small disk, the same physical size as a music CD. However, were you aware that there's also a higher capacity DVD available, called dual layer disks, or DVD DL? These disks can hold up to about 8.4 Gigabytes. Sure, there is the new capacity Blue Ray disks, but you need a newer blue ray burner for that, plus the disks are still quite expensive, about $5 each, or more. DVD DL disks can be purchased in packs of 30 or 50 bringing the cost down to about 80 cents each. Normal capacity DVD disks can be bought in bulk as well, bringing the price per disk down to around 20 cents.
The benefits of burning your data to dual layer disks are:
- Fewer disk to have around
- Compatibility
- Inexpensive
Two of the benefits above are obvious, but the disks are very compatible with existing technology. Even for computers that only have DVD ROM (read only capable) drives, the disks can still be read.
If you've ever copied files to DVDs and were frustrated that you ran out of space and had to take the time to split up your files so they would fit, the dual layer disk is definitely a great asset to have. No local store I've been in has the disks though. This includes Best Buy, Staples, Walmart and Office Max, so you will most likely have to purchase them online.
Although these disks have been available for some time, their existance is not widely known. If you even occassionaly burn files to DVDs, give them a try. You can save some space while saving time not having to split your files to fit on the standard capacity disks.
